29 Mardy [1748] – This day (about this time) the Indians fell upon 5 men who were about half a mile from Fort Dummer, & killed Mr. Joshua Wells on the spot, & Lieut. John Sargeant, who fought a while upon retreat, & captivated his son, Daniel. A 4th (Viz) – receiving 3 shots through is body, fled to the fort where he soon expired. The fifth was Elmer, who scampered into the fort at first and so received no damage. P.S. On the 25 Inst., brake out a fire in London which proved the most terrible, before it was extinquished, ever known in the memory of man.
30 [1748] The weather is now become warm.
31 & the sold body snow dissolves like wax. It is wonderful to behold it in such a manner – wasted by the warmth of the sun only.
1 Vedredy [1748] – Charming, warm, springlike – the Snow – can’t bear it – ah, it’s almost gone. The Snow being gone in an unusual Manner and surprizing haste – the weather continuing warm with a comfortable prospect of a forward Spring.
